Abstract: Alexandrium tamarense,a toxic dinoflagellate,is spreading all over the ocean in the world, including Bohai Sea,East China Sea,South China Sea and so on. A. tamarense is a major cause of toxic red tides, which can produce paralytic shellfish toxic (PST) that can be numerously accumulated in the bodies of fish and shellfish through food chain, and then bring serious harm to ocean environment or people health. Therefore, extensive and in-depth studies were conducted on the occurrence, development and toxin characteristics of A. tamarense. This paper summarized the growth environment, molecular identification, algal interspecific competition relationship and governance of A. tamarense, with the aim to provide references for further understanding and control of this alga.

Key words: Alexandrium tamarense, nutrients, environment factors, molecular marker, algal relationship, algal blooms governance
